The Lihuel Calel department is located in the south of the province of La Pampa in central Argentina and is one of the province's 22 administrative units .
The name comes from the Mapuche language and means mountains of life .
In the north it borders on the department of Utracán , in the east on the departments of Caleu Caleu and Hucal , in the west on the department of Curacó and in the south on the province of Río Negro . In the south, the Río Colorado forms a natural border with the neighboring province.
The capital of the department is Cuchillo-Có.

According to the INDEC , the department had only 439 inhabitants in 2010. This makes the department the most sparsely populated department both in the province and in the entire country.
