The Puelén department is located in the southwest of the La Pampa province in central Argentina and is one of the province's 22 administrative units .

The name comes from the Mapuche language and means plain of the east .

In the north it borders on the Department of Chical Co , in the east on the Departments of Curacó and Limay Mahuida , in the west on the province of Mendoza and in the south on the province of Río Negro . In the south and southwest, the Río Colorado and the Casa de Piedra reservoir form a natural border with the neighboring province. It is the largest department in this province.

The capital of the department is called 25 de Mayo (also Colonia 25 de Mayo ).

Communities

In addition to the capital, in which more than 80% of the inhabitants of the department live, there is the municipality of Puelén and the settlement ( ente comunal ) Casa de Piedra on the reservoir of the same name.

According to the INDEC , the population rose from 7757 in 2001 to 9468 in 2010. This means that the department behind Toay recorded the strongest population growth in the province.
