The Toay department is located in the La Pampa province in central Argentina and is one of the province's 22 administrative units. Toay is the capital of the department of the same name, in the northeast of which is the provincial capital of Santa Rosa de Toay .

In the east of the department, the national route 35 runs from Bahía Blanca in the south to Río Cuarto in the north in a north-south orientation . In addition, the national provincial roads 7, 9, 11, 12 and 14 run through the department. Via the provincial road 12 and the national route 35 there is a connection to the nearby national route 5, which leads from the neighboring provincial capital Santa Rosa de Toay in the direction of Luján in the east.

About 12 km northeast of the city of Toay is the Santa Rosa Airport , which is served by two airlines that fly to Buenos Aires-Jorge Newberry and Viedma Gobernador Edgardo Castello .

"Toay" means "to turn", "to turn around" or "rodeo" in the indigenous language.
