Website of the Entre Ríos Province

Entre Ríos (literally between the rivers , named after the Paraná and Uruguay rivers ) is a province in northeast Argentina . It lies between the Río Paraná (border with the provinces of Santa Fe and Buenos Aires ) in the west and southwest and the Río Uruguay (border with Uruguay ) in the east. In the north it borders on the province of Corrientes .

geography

As part of the Argentine Mesopotamia , the province is almost completely flat with hills a few 100 meters high. There are two low ranges of hills called Lomadas or Cuchillas : the Cuchilla de Montiel in the west and the Cuchilla Grande in the east. Both are separated by the Río Gualeguay .

The province of Entre Ríos is bordered and traversed by many rivers. In the west and south the Río Paraná forms the border, in the east the Río Uruguay and the Río Mocoretá and in the north the Río Guayquiraró .

There are a number of thermal springs along the Río Uruguay Basin, for example in Federación , Villa Elisa , Colón .

National parks

Within the province borders two national parks have been established: The National Park El Palmar and the National Park Diamante .

climate

In the province of Entre Ríos, the north has a subtropical climate with no dry season, while the south is dominated by a temperate pampa climate. The province is crossed by winds from the Atlantic side. In addition, there are local winds such as the Pampero , the Sudestada and the north wind. The average annual rainfall is 900 millimeters. The average summer temperature (November to March) is 20 degrees Celsius. In winter the temperature drops to 10 to 13 degrees Celsius.

population

Although numerous descendants of the Guaraní Indians still live in Entre Ríos , the province was mainly shaped by European immigrants who established agricultural colonies in the 19th century. Among them were many Volga Germans , especially around Gualeguaychú and in numerous villages south of the provincial capital Paraná , but also Belgians, for example in Villaguay .

The population is concentrated on the banks of the Río Paraná and Río Uruguay . On the Río Paraná lies the provincial capital Paraná, with 250,000 inhabitants the largest city in the province, furthermore on the same bank are the smaller cities Gualeguay , Victoria (on branches of the Paraná) and La Paz with between 25,000 and 45,000 inhabitants each. On the Río Uruguay lies the industrially important Concordia (150,000 inhabitants) and the carnival and tourism center Gualeguaychú (80,000 inhabitants) as well as the smaller towns of Concepción del Uruguay (80,000 inhabitants) and Colón (25,000 inhabitants).

Entre Ríos is famous for the Carnival of Gualeguaychú, which is a bit similar to the Carnival of Rio de Janeiro .
