Concepción del Uruguay is the capital of the Uruguay Department in the Entre Ríos Province in northeastern Argentina . It is located in the east of the province, near the border with Uruguay and has a population of 67,474 (2001, INDEC ).
location
Concepción is located on the Riacho Illapé , a tributary of the Río Uruguay . The area is a slightly hilly, partly wooded grassland. The climate is subtropical and humid all year round.
history
The Concepción del Uruguay, founded in 1783 , was one of the first places to join the Argentine independence movement after the May Revolution in 1810. In the 1810s and 1820s, the city had to defend itself not only against the Spanish troops, but also against the Portuguese and later against the Unitarians (see History of Argentina ). In 1816 and between 1860 and 1883 the city was the provincial capital.
Its most famous citizen was the freedom fighter and later Argentine president Justo José de Urquiza , who gave Concepción city rights in 1826 and founded the first state school in Argentina here in 1848. In 1870 Urquiza was murdered, which led to further small-scale fighting. When the situation stabilized again from 1880, the city developed primarily as a trading center; its port and its customs were nationally important.
Attractions
Several buildings worth seeing date from the 19th century. The basilica was built by Urquiza in 1857 and is now home to his mausoleum . The higher school Colegio Superior del Uruguay (1848) and the post and telegraph house (1868) also come from Urquiza . The Historical Museum offers an insight into the time of the Wars of Independence.
A little outside the city are the palaces of Santa Cándida and San José , which are also worth seeing and also count towards Urquiza.
economy
Today, Concepción is still mainly a commercial and service center; Industry and agriculture only play a subordinate role.
