Vizconde de Lascano Tegui

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Vizconde de Lascano Tegui (* 1887 in Concepción del Uruguay , † 1966 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine diplomat and often with Jorge Luis Borges of compared writer . Due to the few and sometimes contradicting information about himself, he is considered a mysterious eccentric, shrouded in mystery, who, for example , appointed himself Vizconde , burgrave.

For a while it was even questionable whether he actually existed or whether he was the fictional character of another author who wrote books under this name. However, this is now undisputed. Since the rediscovery of his books Familienalbum and Von der Anmut im Schlafe, and the research carried out by the translator Walter Boehlich and above all by Dietrich Lückoff (1957–2014), we now know a lot about his résumé.

Life

Lascano was born as Emilio Lascanótegui ; his father was of Argentine Basque descent and his mother was from Uruguay . He spent his childhood in San Telmo , the oldest district of Buenos Aires. Claiming that he was studying law in Buenos Aires, he made a long journey through Europe and North Africa in 1908/09, ostensibly for the Universal Postal Union . At the same time he worked as a translator and journalist and was involved as a speaker for the Partido Radical and published two volumes of poetry.

In 1914 he emigrated to France and studied dental technology in Paris and then worked full-time as a dentist. He wrote reports and essays for Argentine newspapers. In 1923 he entered the diplomatic service of his country. In 1936 he left France to head the consulates in Caracas and Los Angeles until 1944 . Back in Argentina, he wrote stories for a comic magazine. Here he was also a member of the Proa - an Argentine writer's group.

When he died in 1966, he left behind 12 books, countless articles and a large, unprinted, now-lost estate.
