General Roca is the capital of the department of the same name in the northwest of the Río Negro province in southwest Argentina .

The city is named after General Julio Argentino Roca , who commanded the desert campaign through which the Argentine nation-state came into effective possession of Patagonia , but in which the Indians of the region were severely decimated. He was President of Argentina from 1880 to 1888 and from 1898 to 1904.

The city is located in the valley of the Río Negro , which is artificially irrigated at this point and can therefore be used for agriculture. The valley's climate is dry and warm, as the valley is protected from the strong winds of the Patagonian climate.

General Roca is the center of a large area in which mainly fruit is grown. Apples in particular are grown in square fields that are surrounded by a double row of poplars to protect them from the wind. In the city, the agricultural products are processed in agro-industrial plants.

Important cultural institutions in the city are the Casa de la Cultura cultural center, founded in 1972, and the Instituto Universitario Patagónico de las Artes , which was spun off from it in 1983 , and is the most important art school in Northern Patagonia in the fields of theater, music, dance and film. It has been a university since 2014 and is jointly managed by the provincial government and the Fundación Cultural Patagonia . There are also two theaters, the Teatro de la Estación in the old station building and the independent stage El Biombo .

The daily newspaper Diario Río Negro is published in General Roca , whose circulation area includes the entire province of Río Negro and the neighboring province of Neuquén, making it the most important journalistic publication in Northern Patagonia.
