Marianne Cope (* January 23, 1838 as Anna Barbara Koob in Heppenheim , Hesse ; † August 9, 1918 in Hawaii ) was a German-American religious sister . She is venerated as a saint in the Catholic Church .

Live and act

Marianne Cope was born as the fifth child of the married couple Peter and Barbara Koob in Heppenheim an der Bergstrasse. The Koob family emigrated to the United States in 1840, to Utica in the US state of New York , where they later adopted the name Cope as the Anglicized form of the name.

In 1862 Barbara Cope entered the St. Anthony Monastery of the North American Franciscan Sisters and was given the religious name Marianne to dress . In 1875 Sr. Marianne was appointed Superior of St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse , New York, and two years later was elected Superior General of the Order .

When M. Marianne Cope learned of the fate of the lepers living in what was then the Kingdom of Hawaii , she went to the Hawaiian island of Molokai with six other religious sisters and a lay helper on October 23, 1883 , after 50 other religious orders had previously been deployed due to the high risk of infection fatal disease. There she devoted herself to caring for the lepers until the end of her life, including the priest who was already sick at the time , St. Damian de Veuster , counted. P. de Veuster contracted leprosy while caring for the sick on Molokai. M. Marianne did not become infected with leprosy and died on August 9, 1918 at the age of 80 after having worked on Molokai for a long time.

Beatification and Canonization

The postulator of the beatification process initiated in 1974 was the Italian Franciscan Father Ernesto Piacentini OFMConv. On May 14, 2005, M. Marianne Cope was together with Ascensión del Corazón de Jesús as the first in the pontificate of Pope Benedict XVI. Beatified after Pope John Paul II had previously consented to the beatification.

In December 2011, Pope Benedict's decree recognizing another miracle at the intercession of M. Marianne was published. In the cardinal consistory of February 18, 2012, Pope Benedict XVI. the canonization firmly; it took place on October 21, 2012.
