Peer Guardian is an IP -blockende firewall , both off and incoming connections from multiple IP addresses on the basis of party lists (English blacklists ) can be prevented. PeerGuardian is open source and freely available as free software .

features

PeerGuardian is specifically designed to block spying organizations like the RIAA , MPAA , MediaForce , MediaDefender , BayTSP , Ranger , OverPeer and NetPD while in for example peer-to-peer programs like FastTrack , BitTorrent , IRC etc. in order to minimize the "danger" in file sharing networks. However, even when surfing the Internet normally, numerous IP addresses that do not belong directly to the website displayed can be blocked, including advertisers, but also spyware and companies that collect private data.

history

PeerGuardian 1 was programmed in Visual Basic and required a relatively large amount of RAM and computing power when it was used in peer-to-peer networks, for example . In addition, it only blocked the conventional TCP protocol. PeerGuardian 2 was written in the programming languages C and C ++ and, on the other hand, requires almost no system resources. The loading of the block lists and thus the program is also much faster. Furthermore, the new version is designed in such a way that practically all Internet protocols and most ports can be blocked.

The lists of IP addresses to be blocked used by PeerGuardian are also used by file sharing programs such as Kazaa Lite and eMule .

disadvantage

The filter lists contain over half of the entire IP address range and therefore, in addition to potentially dangerous addresses, certainly also a large number of false positives .

PeerGuardian, for example, blocks the entire IP ranges of the Chaos Computer Club , so that one of the largest German XMPP servers jabber.ccc.de can no longer be used by PeerGuardian users unless the user manually removes the affected IP ranges from the respective blacklists.

Since the blocked IP areas are of course also known to the relevant organizations as well as the music and film industry, undisturbed copyright infringements are simply not possible. A blocklist is unusable, especially with dynamic IP addresses. For static IP addresses, however, a current blocklist can be expected to provide protection for a certain period of time.

Under the Windows operating system, PeerGuardian can only be operated with administrator rights. The program is compatible with Windows 2000, XP, Vista, and 7 (including server versions), in the 32- and 64-bit version.

PeerBlock

“PeerBlock” is a spin-off from PeerGuardian 2, which primarily takes care of blocking IP blocks under Windows. The goal is still to prevent connections to computers (servers) that are on a blacklist.

MoBlock is an open source console program that is used to block certain IPs or entire IP ranges. It uses lists in PeerGuardian format to define the areas to be blocked.

It is practically the Linux equivalent of PeerGuardian. Therefore there are also plans between the developers of the software to make MoBlock the Linux version of PeerGuardian. At the moment (version 0.8) MoBlock only supports the x86 architecture (i586).

iplist is similar moblock an alternative for PeerGuardian for Linux distributions . It is open source and has a graphical user interface called IPblock, similar to PeerGuardian's, which can be used to configure and monitor the program. Iplist also supports block lists in PeerGuardian format.

The official website offers compiled versions for various distributions, including Ubuntu , Fedora and openSUSE . The current version was published at the end of 2010.
