El Palmar National Park

The El Palmar National Park (Spanish: Parque Nacional El Palmar) is an IUCN Category II national park in the Entre Rios province in northeast Argentina . It is about 85 km² and is located halfway between the cities of Colón and Concordia on the western, right bank of the Uruguay River .

history

The national park was established in 1966 to protect the characteristic groves with stocks of the Yatay palm trees . Since October 1990, three areas of the park have been placed under absolute protection from human activities such as land use, farming or hunting. Populations of this plant have almost completely disappeared in recent years in their original range outside the park in the provinces of Chaco , Corrientes and Santa Fe due to excessive agriculture and livestock.

Ecosystem

A moderately humid savanna ecosystem prevails in the park, which is typical in the Argentinean intercurrent land. This system is characterized by patches of palm trees of various species, grassy areas and small deciduous forests, each of which is interrupted by small rivers and streams draining east to the Uruguay River. Local wildlife includes blue macaws , woodpeckers, rheas , viscachas , capybaras (water pigs), foxes and other species.

Calera de Barquín

In the middle of the national park are the ruins of the Calera de Barquín lime distillery . This was operated from 1650 by the Jesuits in the Jesuit reductions of the Guaraní until they were ousted by the Spanish crown in 1767.
