The Los Alerces National Park ( Parque Nacional Los Alerces ) was founded 1937th It is located in the northeast of the province of Chubut in the Argentine part of Patagonia . It covers an area of 2,630 km² along the Chilean border and is on average 900 meters above sea level. Only a limited part of the park is accessible to tourists, the remaining part is reserved for research. The park was set up to protect the last stocks of the Patagonian cypress ( Fitzroya cupressoides ; Alerce in Spanish ).

flora

Due to the high rainfall, the park is one of the wettest areas on earth, Valdivian rainforest with tree-high bamboo and various deciduous and coniferous trees grows in the entire western part . The so-called Alerces , which give the park its name, are outstanding . This is an extremely slow-growing and very long-lived cypress species. The trees grow on average only 0.8 mm in diameter per year and can reach heights of up to 50 meters. The age of the oldest trees in the park is estimated to be around 3000 years. A specimen that is around a thousand years old is available to tourists on Lake Menéndez . The Alerces were on the verge of extinction, as their wood is in great demand and natural regeneration is only possible under special conditions (fire, lava fields); otherwise the areas are populated by deciduous trees (especially Lomatia ssp.).

The park is well developed for tourism and offers various accommodations in hotels, guest houses and campsites. It has an extensive network of hiking trails. The park can also be reached in a day trip from Esquel .

climate

Most of the lower elevations of Los Alerces National Park are classified as maritime climates , which are referred to as Cfb in the Koppen classification system . Moist clouds from the Pacific hit the Andes on the Chilean-Argentine border and produce up to 3,000 millimeters of precipitation annually, mostly in the form of rain in lower elevations and snow in higher elevations. In the rain shadow (leeward), precipitation decreases rapidly east of the Andean peaks and drops to about 800 millimeters on the eastern edge of the park. Temperatures in the park range from cold to moderate. There can be frost in any month of the year. The warmest month is January with average daily maximums of 24 ° C and minimums of 8 ° C in the lower part of the park. The weather is characterized by great variability. The average temperatures in July, the coldest month, are a maximum of 7 ° C and a minimum of −1 ° C. Frosts down to about −15 ° C can occur; prolonged frost is absent. Average temperatures drop with altitude. The tree line is around 1,400 meters, plus there are bare rocks, permanent or semi-permanent snowfields, and the Torrecillas Glacier between Lake Menėnendez .

In the west of the park there is high rainfall and Valdivian rainforests below the higher elevations of the Andes. Much of the rest of the park is Patagonian forest, similar to that in the Lanín and Nahuel Huapi National Parks , with southern Coihuen and Lenga beeches . Arrayan trees ( Luma apiculata) can be seen along the Arrayanes River.

Although there is no real dry season, most of the rainfall in the winter months of July to August is in the southern hemisphere, with lesser amounts falling in the southern summer.
