The Nahuel Huapi Lake (in Spanish: Lago Nahuel Huapi ) is located in Argentina on the border between the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro in northern Patagonia ; it is the source lake of the Río Limay . In the Mapuche language , his name means "island of the jaguar".

The lake has an area of 531 km² with a maximum depth of 460 m. The Nahuel Huapi has an elongated shape with many fjord- like branches.

It is located in one of the oldest national parks in Argentina , the Nahuel Huapi National Park . This national park was founded in 1934 and has an area of 7098.9 km². It stretches for 130 km along the Argentine-Chilean border. The national park is characterized by high mountains, a multitude of lakes and extensive forests, the Lago Nahuel Huapi is the largest lake in this national park. The Lanín National Park connects to the north .

Los Arrayanes National Park is located in the area of Lake Nahuel Huapi, completely surrounded by the Nahuel Huapi National Park . On a peninsula, the Península de Quetrihué , there is an extensive area of primeval Arrayán myrtle forest ( Bosque des Arrayanes , Latin Luma apiculata ). These trees have no bark and are reddish in color. An Arrayán Forest, inaccessible to tourists, lies opposite on Isla Victoria , the largest island in the lake.

The main city on the banks of the Nahuel Huapi is San Carlos de Bariloche , a center of Argentine tourism . In the vicinity of the city there is an important ski area, the Cerro Catedral . The only other town on the shore is Villa La Angostura in the north.

The Modesta Victoria excursion boat is worth mentioning . It was built in Amsterdam in 1937 and then dismantled and shipped to Bariloche. It has been on the Nahuel Huapi since 1938. Among other things, Che Guevara and Alberto Granado traveled with this ship to the Chilean border in 1952 - to be read in Guevara's Diarios de Motocicleta .

According to some eyewitnesses, as well as the local Indians , a plesiosaur-like monster, the Nahuelito, lives in the lake .
