The Lanin National Park is located in the Argentine part of Patagonia , in the southwestern province of Neuquen . The park belongs to the "Altos Andes" eco-region and is home to large forest areas and the Patagonian steppe . It extends over 412,000 hectares. The western border of the national park is also the border between Argentina and Chile . The national park administration is in the well-known local recreation area San Martín de los Andes , which lies on the eastern national park border.

The park was founded in 1937 in order to preserve the "north-north Patagonian forest", in which the characteristic species Chilean araucaria ( Araucaria araucana ), Rauli beech ( Nothofagus alpina ) and Pellin beech ( Nothofagus obliqua ) live. These occur only in a small area in Argentina.
