San Martín de los Andes is the capital of the Lácar department in the Neuquén province in southwest Argentina . The place belongs to the municipalities of the 1st category in the classification of municipalities in the province of Neuquén.

origin of the name

In the Araucanian language of the Mapudungun , the name of the city is Pucaullhué . This word means place of the seagulls .

history

Colonel Jorge Juan Rhode founded the city on February 4, 1898. The Kazike Curruhunca was the ruler of the area before the city was founded.

geography

The city lies on Lake Lácar and is close to the Andes . San Martín de los Andes is about 1,575 km from Buenos Aires .

economy

San Martín de los Andes is the main tourist center of the Neuquén province. Tourists come to the area all year round, fishing, hiking, canoeing and kayaking, but also skiing in winter in the ski area at nearby Cerro Chapelco.

population

According to INDEC estimates, the population increased from 14,842 inhabitants ( 1991 ) to 22,432 inhabitants in 2001 . Nowadays the population of the city is more than 25,000.
