El Rey National Park

The National Park El Rey (Spanish: Parque Nacional El Rey) is a national park of Argentina , which is located in the Argentine northwest in the province of Salta in the Anta department . The park is 80 km from the provincial capital Salta and has an area of ​​441.62 km².

The park was created to contain a representative selection of the ecoregion and transition area of ​​the southern Andean Yungas . The climate is warm and the annual rainfall varies between 500 and 700 mm. The flora is diverse and shows different species in five levels depending on the altitude (from 750 to 2000 m). The fauna includes tapirs , anteaters and peccaries, as well as fish in the rivers, streams and lakes. The tapir or anta that eats aquatic plants is the largest South American mammal, weighing up to 300 kg.

The reserve was inhabited by indigenous farming groups, the oldest inhabitants of the Yungas, and includes archaeological sites.
