San Carlos de Bariloche (today's short form Bariloche ) is an Argentine city in the province of Río Negro . It is the capital of the Bariloche department and lies at the foot of the Andes . With 133,500 inhabitants (as of 2010, Dirección Provincial de Estadística y Censos) it is the largest city in the province and an important tourist center due to its location in a green mountain landscape.

The place is famous for its ski area on Cerro Catedral , but also for the beautiful landscape that invites you to climb and hike.

The name Bariloche comes from the Mapuche word Vuriloche and means 'people behind the mountain' ( furi 'behind', che 'people'). The Vuriloche Pass was used by the Mapuche to cross the Andes and was kept secret from Europeans for a long time.

Location and geography

The city is located in a valley in the southern Andes on the shores of Lake Nahuel Huapi , one of the largest lakes in the country. The mountains Otto , Catedral and López are in the vicinity. The metropolitan area is very extensive with a large number of holiday colonies and includes the Llao Llao peninsula . The Cerro Catedral , an important winter sports center, is located south of Bariloche .

history

The areas around the Nahuel Huapí lake were occupied by settlers at the end of the 19th century after the desert campaign of General Julio A. Roca . The Texan cowboy Jarred Jones and the Chilean Carlos Wiederholdt Piwonka, the latter as the namesake of San Carlos, established settlements independently of one another. San Carlos de Bariloche was officially founded in 1902, the city was initially a trading center with southern Chile . As early as the early 20th century, the area attracted foreign visitors, such as US President Theodore Roosevelt and the Prince of Wales . In 1932 the place was connected to the railway network, which brought an upturn in tourism, especially after the Second World War . Bariloche made headlines on American television in 1994 when it became known that the former SS-Hauptsturmführer Erich Priebke was staying there. In addition, the SS men Josef Schwammberger , Reinhard Kopps , Ferdinand Tröstl and the "flying ace" Hans-Ulrich Rudel (not a member of the SS) hid in Bariloche from time to time . Bariloche has a larger German community whose president Erich Priebke was until his arrest.

Economy and research

The city's economy is driven by tourism , while the chocolate industry and trade with nearby Chile also play a role. Furthermore, the high-tech company INVAP has its headquarters in Bariloche, which develops nuclear reactors , space travel and ecotechnology (e.g. waste and sewage processing, wind energy plants ) and is also internationally active.

In 1955 the Atomic Research Center of Argentina was opened here (Centro Atómico Bariloche) with a focus on nuclear technology with a research reactor, with research soon also being carried out in other areas of physics.

tourism

Bariloche welcomes tourists all year round. In summer, extreme sports enthusiasts (kayakers, paragliders, mountaineers, etc.), trout anglers, hikers and bathers come (beaches on the neighboring lakes of Nahuel Huapí). In winter, the Cerro Catedral winter sports center , one of the largest and most important in South America, attracts skiers and snowboarders. The annual number of visitors is up to one million tourists per year (2005: 727,784, 2006: 804,823).

In the off-season, Bariloche is by far the most popular destination for school trips and honeymoons in the country, which means that the hotels are well-filled almost all year round and there is always a rich cultural and night life to be found. Bariloche is also a popular vacation rental spot , many of which are owned by wealthy Buenos Aires Argentina residents. In Argentina, Bariloche is also known for chocolate production as well as German and Swiss cultural heritage.

With the airport Bariloche is located in the city's main commercial airport Patagonia.
