Osorno is a city on the Panamericana in southern Chile . It has 147,826 inhabitants (as of 2017).
The German and also Swiss influence cannot be overlooked to this day.
Climate and geography
Osorno is located at the confluence of the Río Damas and the Río Rahue in Region X ( Región de los Lagos ) of Chile, about 100 kilometers north of the regional capital Puerto Montt . The city is located in the center of the Osorno province , consisting of a total of 7 municipalities: Osorno, San Juan de la Costa , San Pablo , Puerto Octay , Puyehue , Río Negro and Purranque .
The area - which is sometimes also called Chilean Switzerland - has many lakes and volcanoes , one of the most beautiful of all is the picturesque Osorno volcano with its very uniform cone.
The climate is moderately cool. In summer, the average temperature is around 15 degrees Celsius, while winter is relatively rainy (from June to August an average of 186.6 mm falls; the annual average is 110.96 mm), with an average temperature of 7.2 degrees Celsius.
history
Osorno was founded in 1558 by Governor García Hurtado de Mendoza . In the period 1603-1788, however, the city lay in ruins after the Arauco War , so with the resident in southern Chile clashes Mapuche - Indians had been destroyed.
The Osorno region, which has been inhabited by Huilliche since ancient times , was forcibly attached to the Chilean state in the 19th century, and from 1850 onwards it was settled with European immigrants. At that time, German-speaking colonists in particular had a decisive influence on the region. A German church and a German school were built. The population in 1875 was 1895, mostly Germans. The “Instituto Alemán de Osorno” (German School Osorno) celebrated its 150th anniversary in March 2004. The German-language newspaper “ Cóndor ” is also distributed in Osorno .
Attractions
Osorno's surrounding area, the Región de los Lagos , is popular with trekking fans , among others .
In the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park , about 80 km southeast of the city, is the Volcán Osorno of the same name .
economy
Osorno is the most important center of the southern Chilean milk and agriculture and has the largest Feria de Ganado - the cattle trade in Chile. There are two universities in the city: the state Universidad de Los Lagos and the private Universidad San Sebastian .
