Alfonso Montecino

Alfonso Montecino (born October 28, 1924 in Osorno , Chile , † August 15, 2015 in Bloomington , Indiana , United States ) was a Chilean pianist, composer and music teacher.

Montecino studied at the Conservatory of the Universidad de Chile and was a piano student of Claudio Arrau . He studied composition with Randall Thompson at Princeton University , with Bohuslav Martinů at Mannes College of Music , with Roger Sessions at the Juilliard School of Music and with Edgar Varèse at Columbia University .

As a pianist he has performed in Europe, Asia and America. His performances of the entire Well-Tempered Clavier by Bach , which he played more than thirty times, and all 32 piano sonatas by Beethoven became famous . In addition, he worked until his retirement as a professor of piano at the Indiana University Music School in Bloomington .

Montecino composed more than fifty works, including a piano concerto, the world premiere of which he played himself at the Festival Latinoamericano de Música de Caracas , other works for piano and orchestra, two string quartets, a saxophone quartet, a trio for piano, violin and cello, a cantata, chamber music and choral works, piano pieces and songs.
