The Vicente Perez Rosales National Park (Spanish Parque Vicente Peréz Rosales ) is located in Chile in the Xth region, the Región de los Lagos . The oldest national park in South America , which was established in 1926, is named after the Chilean politician and diplomat Vicente Pérez Rosales (1807–1886).

geography

The 231,000 hectare national park is located about 60 km east of Puerto Varas in the Andes and extends to the border with Argentina . The highest point is the Osorno volcano at 2652 meters. At the foot of the volcano extends the mountain lake Lago Todos los Santos , which extends far into the Andes. The lake is drained by the Río Petrohué , which flows southeast and finally flows into the Pacific. After 16 km the river passes the Saltos de Petrohué , a series of spectacular rapids and waterfalls.

Flora and fauna

Due to the numerous rainfall in the park and the altitude, the vegetation is characterized by Valdivian rainforest . Mammals living in the park include pudú and puma , the argentine battle fox and the Chilean forest cat , all of which are extremely shy and rarely encountered by visitors. There are also several marsupials , such as the Chiloe opossum and Chilean opossum mouse, as well as several species of birds .

tourism

The national park is one of the most important tourist destinations in the Región de los Lagos , and the infrastructure is accordingly good. There are regular excursion buses to the park from Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas . The access road is paved as far as the Saltos de Petrohué , which is one of the main attractions and has been made accessible to visitors by means of a number of shorter walks and bridges. There are no longer marked hiking trails in the park.

In Petrohué on the shores of Lake Todos los Santos there is a hotel and campsites. A popular tour is the Cruce de Lagos , a multi-day combined bus-boat excursion across Lago Todos los Santos and Lago Nahuel Huapi to San Carlos de Bariloche in Argentina .
