The Saltos de Petrohué are waterfalls of Río Petrohué , located downstream near the Lago Todos los Santos in the south of Chile pour. They are located within the Vicente Pérez Rosales National Park near the road at Petrohué, a place on the lake shore. Many tourists who take the route between Puerto Montt in Chile and Bariloche in Argentina stop here.

The waterfall sits over a base of basaltic lava ( andesite ) that comes from the neighboring Osorno volcano . The current transports an average of 270 cubic meters of water per second. During the rainy season this amount increases because the level of the neighboring lake rises by up to 2 meters. The lake water is usually clear with a shade of green and blue. Occasional lahars from the neighboring active volcanoes cause the water to carry sand and silt . The transportation of this abrasive material explains why the rocks around the falls look so polished.

Access

Access to this nature reserve is possible through road 225 from Puerto Varas , which is 64 kilometers from Petrohué. There is a public bus service that covers this route every 30 minutes. During the trip you can see the landscape of the Valdivian forest, Lago Llanquihue , the Calbuco and the Osorno .
