The Lago Llanquihue (dt. Llanquihue Lake ) is the second largest lake in Chile with 877 km² (for comparison, the area of Lake Constance is 536 km²).

It is located in the Xth Region ( Región de los Lagos ) near Puerto Montt . On the south bank of the lake is the city of Puerto Varas , to the west the city of Frutillar and to the north the city of Puerto Octay . The lake is fed from the Andes. Many immigrants of German origin live around the lake .

Visiting the beaches by the lake and driving around the lake are popular tourist activities. From the lake, which is 70  m above sea level , there is a wonderful view of the Osorno volcano with its 2652  m high summit and the Calbuco volcano . Due to the great abundance of fish, the area is an insider tip for anglers.

geography

The lake was formed about 40,000 years ago at the end of the last glacial period , the so-called Llanquihue glacial (cold period). At this time, the moraine system on the west side of the lake completely joined together to form a barrier, preventing further drainage of the water. Today the Rio Maullin forms the only natural drainage of the huge lake. It leaves the lake in the town of Llanquihue in the southwest and flows after 85 kilometers into the Golfo Coronados , a small bay in the Pacific north of the island of Chiloé .

history

In 1552 Pedro de Valdivia discovered the lake. In 1558 the writer Alonso de Ercilla y Zúñiga and the governor of Chile García Hurtado de Mendoza reached the lake again.

The first immigrants came to the lake from 1853. Previously, the German Bernhard Eunom Philippi (1811-1852) had explored the area around the lake in 1842.

The Chilean government invited other German immigrants to settle in this area. After the March Revolution failed in Germany in 1848 , several thousand Germans came to the area. They founded Puerto Montt in 1853 and settled in the towns of Llanquihue , Frutillar and Puerto Varas , El Maiten and Puerto Octay . Between 1856 and 1860, 54 Protestant religious refugees from the Lower Silesian Zillertal-Erdmannsdorf , the Zillertal Inclinants , settled on Lake Llanquihue.

The cities are still German today with many German buildings from the 19th century and numerous cultural events.

salmon

Chile has now overtaken Norway as the world's largest exporter of farmed salmon . However, the majority of the often industrially operated salmon farms on the lakes in the south of the country are still in the hands of Norwegian or Japanese agricultural groups. The Fundación Chile began to use modern technologies for salmon farming in Chile in the 1970s. At the beginning of the 1980s, the Salmones Antártica company started its first large salmon farm on Lake Llanquihue, which was followed by numerous imitators in the region of Los Lagos , which is rich in lakes . The company was later sold to the Japanese group Nippon Suisan .
