Frutillar is a city in the south of the South American Andean state Chile in the Región de los Lagos (Region X).
Frutillar is located on the west bank of Lake Llanquihue , with around 860 km² the second largest lake in Chile. If you look from Frutillar on the opposite side of the lake, you can see the mighty Volcán Osorno with its 2652 m height.
The city consists of an upper town (Frutillar Alto) and a lower town (Frutillar Bajo). The Panamericana runs near Frutillar Alto. Frutillar Bajo is right on the lake shore. Frutillar is a very German-influenced city.
Frutillar has a population of around 15,000 (2003).
history
In 1552 Pedro de Valdivia reached Lake Llanquihue. From 1846, German immigrants settled the area around Lake Llanquihue. They founded the capital of today's Region X, Puerto Montt , in 1853. Frutillar was also founded on November 23, 1856 by German immigrants.
In 1907 the city in Frutillar-Alto received a railway connection on the Santiago – Puerto Montt line.

The city offers wonderful excursions around Lake Llanquihue and Osorno Volcano. To the north of the city is a 33-hectare forest (Centro Forestal) with many types of pine, ideal for hiking. The southernmost palm in the world, the Chile palm ( Jubaea Chilensis ), is also known.
The Museo Colonial Alemán de Frutillar shows the German settlement from the middle of the 19th century. The Frutillar Music Weeks (Semanas Musicales de Frutillar) take place every year (late January and early February).

economy
Tourism is the mainstay of Frutillar. A yacht club invites you to go on sailing tours on Llanquihue Lake. In addition, the Teatro del Lago offers a wide range of cultural and educational offers.
Agriculture with corn and wheat and forestry play a role in the area. Frutillar is conveniently located right on the Panamericana and within easy reach of the commercial centers of Osorno and Puerto Montt.
