The Conguillío National Park (Spanish Parque Nacional Conguillío ) is located in Chile in Region IX, the Región de la Araucanía . The park is also known as Los Paraguas ( The Umbrellas , alluding to the shape of the numerous large araucarias ). In the language of the Mapuche Indians, Conguillio means something like water with pine nuts .

geography

The 60,833 hectare national park is located about 80 km east of Temuco in the Andes . The highest point is the active Llaima volcano , currently around 3,145 meters, which last erupted in January 2008. During this eruption, it grew from its previous height of 3,125 meters, which appears on maps, to its current height. There are several mountain lakes, of which Lago Conguillío and Laguna Verde are the largest. The small Laguna Arco Iris has only existed since 1994, when a lava dam was created during an eruption of the volcano and dammed the lake. The name Arco Iris is Spanish and means "rainbow".

Flora and fauna

The partially dense stocks of araucarias and southern beeches are characteristic of the park's landscape .

tourism

There are several campsites in the park, but their equipment is quite spartan. There is also a café at Laguna Conguillío. The park is a bit difficult to reach for individual tourists, buses run from Temuco to the junction of the access road behind Melipeuco. The road through the park (gravel road / dirt road) is only passable for normal cars with caution and in normal weather conditions. A section of the Sendero de Chile hiking trail leads through the park . A smaller ski area is located on the western slope of the Llaima volcano .
