The National Park Bosque de Fray Jorge (span. Parque Nacional Bosque de Fray Jorge ) is located in Chile in the Región de Coquimbo . He is part of a biosphere reserve of UNESCO .
geography
The national park is 100 km south of La Serena, almost directly on the Pacific , and around 30 km west of Ovalle . The Río Limarí flows into the Pacific about ten kilometers south. The park covers an area of 100 km².

The national park is known for its subtropical cloud forests (hydrophilic forests).
The coastal fog (Spanish: Camanchaca ) remains hanging on the mountain slopes and forms an enclave of the Valdivian rainforest with subtropical vegetation in what is actually a desert-like area .

Typical plant species in the national park:
- Peruvian pepper tree ( Schinus latifolius )
- Azara celastrina
- Lithraea caustica , called Liter in Chile.
- Porlieria chilensis
- Aextoxicon punctatum , which is also called Olivillo in Chile.
- Sarmienta scandens
- Griselinia scandens
A large number of smaller animals live in the park, such as the degu , chinchilla and foxes. Many species of birds live in the woods, as the Chilean Tinamou ( Nothoprocta perdicaria ) and the long-tailed Soldatenstärling ( Sturnella loyca ).
history
The Jorge Fray National Park was established in 1943 and is under the Chilean forest authority CONAF . UNESCO declared the national park a biosphere reserve in 1977. In addition to the national park, two other parks belong to the biosphere reserve, the Talinay and Punta del Viento parks.
