Nahuel Huapi National Park

The Nahuel Huapi National Park is a large nature reserve in Argentina .

The park is named after the Nahuel Huapi , the source lake of the Río Limay . The area lies on the border between the provinces of Neuquén and Río Negro in northern Patagonia .

etymology

The name of the park is derived from the Nahuel Huapi Lake, which the nature park surrounds. In the language of the Mapuche means nahuel Jaguar, huapi means island.

history

As the first Argentine nature park, the Parque Nacional del Sur was established in 1922 by Perito Moreno , who bequeathed a plot of 75 km² to the state for this purpose. In 1934 the area was declared an Argentine National Park by law, at the same time as the Iguazú National Park . The park is managed by the IUCN as a biotope and species protection area (Category IV).

Flora and fauna

The vegetation zones extend over areas of the Patagonian steppe and extend into the Valdivian rainforest in the higher mountain regions .

In the eastern part, Patagonian xerophytes dominate while parts of the western park are covered with rainforests. Lenga southern beech , Coihue southern beech and Antarctic beech are widespread . In addition, the Chilean cedar ( Austrocedrus chilensis ), Lomatia species , Alstroemeria aurantiaca , Mitraria cocinea and Chilean fire shrub ( Embothrium coccineum ), fuchsias , bamboo species and various myrtle plants thrive. The Luma apiculata , an evergreen tree that also belongs to the myrtle family, is strictly protected .
