The Lenga southern beech ( Nothofagus pumilio ) is a species of false beech from the family of the false beech family (Nothofagaceae).
features
The Lenga southern beech is a deciduous tree, reaches a height of up to 30 meters and a diameter of up to 1.5 meters. The bark is light gray and deeply longitudinally fissured. The two-line arranged on the branch and standing on 2 to 6 millimeter long stems are elliptical, the leaf blade is 2 to 4 centimeters long and 1.4 to 3 centimeters wide.
The male flowers are on approximately 4 millimeter long flower stalks. They have fused bracts that form a perigone with five to seven lobes and have 15 to 20 stamens . The female flowers are sessile.
The fruits are small nuts 6 to 7 millimeters long. Two of them stand together, surrounded by a fruit shell ( cupula ).
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 26.
Distribution and habitat
The Lenga southern beech is found in Chile in temperate regions from Talca down to Cape Horn at all altitudes between sea level and tree line . It is also found analogously in Argentina. It is part of the forests of the Andes and Patagonia .
It inhabits areas with low temperatures and poor soils, can form large forests and is found in the forest communities Lenga , Roble-Raulí-Coihue , Coihue de Magallanes Araucaria and Alerce .
Systematics
The lenga southern beech belongs to the subgenus Nothofagus, which includes only five species found in South America .
