Esquel is a city in northwestern Chubut Province , Patagonia in Argentina . It has almost 29,000 inhabitants and is the capital of the Futaleufú department . The name comes from the Mapuche language and means burdock , which here is part of the local flora with the calafate ( Berberis buxifolia ) and other thorny shrubs.

founding

The founding of the city is closely related to the Welsh immigration to Chubut in 1865. It was built on February 25, 1906 as an extension of the settlement Colonia 16 de Octubre , today Trevelin , which means "mill town" in Welsh ( Tre = "city" and Melin = "mill", M is changed to V).

Another important tourist attraction of the city is the narrow-gauge railway with a width of 750 mm, which runs regularly with steam locomotives from German ( Henschel & Sohn GmbH , Cassel ) and American ( The Baldwin Locomotive Works , Philadelphia ) as well as Belgian ( Societe Anonyme Ateliers de Construction de et a Famillieureux ) has been driving wagons two to three times a week for tourist purposes since 1922 until now (2005). The tracks are between Esquel - Nahuel Pan and El Maiten - Leleque Museum. The train is locally called La Trochita and in English The Old Patagonian Express after the book of the same name by Paul Theroux . The boilers of the locomotives have been heated with heavy kerosene since 1922, currently with a mixture of heating oil and waste oil from ship engines in a ratio of 1: 5, maintained in the El Maiten factory and repaired with spare parts made here according to the original plans.
