The blue macaws ( Anodorhynchus ) are a genus of medium-sized to large parrots with a very large and powerful beak. The long stepped tail is wedge-shaped with pointed feather tips. The tail is longer than the attached wings. The cheeks are feathered in contrast to those of the real macaws , but a wide eye ring and the base of the mandible are bare and bright yellow. The species of the genus have blue plumage, with the undersides of the flight and tail feathers being black.

With a length of approx. 100 cm, the hyacinth macaw is the largest of all parrots; the other species of the blue macaw , the Lear's macaw and the probably extinct turquoise macaw , are noticeably smaller with body lengths of approx. 72 cm and 68 cm.

The species of the genus

Only two of the original three or four species of the genus are still present today. Conservation measures taken in recent years have contributed to the recovery of the hyacinth and lear's macaw populations. The species are monotypical .

Living area

The habitat of the recent species is limited to the middle east of South America .
