The department of El Cuy is located in the northwest of the province of Río Negro in southern Argentina and is one of 13 administrative units in the province.

It is bordered to the north by the Department of General Roca , to the east by the department of Avellaneda , to the south by the departments of Nueve de Julio and Veinticinco de Mayo , to the west by the Pilcaniyeu department and to the northwest by the province of Neuquén .

The capital of the department of El Cuy is the same El Cuy .
