Choele Choel is the capital of the Avellaneda department in the Río Negro province in southern Argentina . It is located on the left bank of the Río Negro opposite the Isla Grande de Choele Choel . The Río Negro forms the fertile Valle Medio in this zone .

history
Choele Choel was founded on July 9, 1879 by the Coronel Conrado Villegas on behalf of the then Minister of War Julio Argentino Roca . The founding name of the place was Nicolás Avellaneda . After a flood, residents moved to a place called the Pampa de los Molinos . Choele Choel is the most populous place in the zone today.
The Irish-born Argentine writer Rodolfo Walsh was born in 1927 in Lamarque on the Isla Grande de Choele Choel.

Choele Choel is a major transport hub at the intersection of Ruta Nacional 22 and Ruta Nacional 250 , about 1000 kilometers from Buenos Aires . The distances to General Roca are 180 kilometers, to Las Grutas 193 kilometers and to Puerto Madryn 460 kilometers.
