Las Grutas

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Las Grutas is a seaside resort in southern Argentina , located on the Atlantic coast of the Río Negro province . It is growing extremely quickly and is now one of the most important seaside resorts in the country, with around 250,000 tourists per season. 3,500 residents currently live permanently in the town. Administratively it is a district of the city of San Antonio Oeste .

The name (German: the grottos ) comes from the cavities that the surf has eaten into the steep coast near the village. This cliff gives the beach its own character.

The place was founded in 1964. The scenic beauty of the beaches in the area soon led to the opening of numerous campsites, which mainly attracted those seeking peace and quiet. However, since the 1980s, the place quickly became a fad. Numerous hotels and entertainment venues opened up and the center was urbanized along the lines of the cities on the Mediterranean coast . Today Las Grutas is the largest and most important seaside resort in Patagonia .

Negative side effects of the unchecked growth are the increasing pollution of the water in the area and despite the small number of inhabitants also the formation of slums.

One of the attractions of the place is its unusually high water temperature, which is due to the high amount of sunshine in the region and the sheltered location in the Golfo San Matías .
