history
The name of the place was derived from the red mountains that surround it. The foundation of the place is celebrated on December 7th, because on this day in 1911 the railway line to San Carlos de Bariloche reached the settlement. In 1939 the national government decided to create the place Sierra Colorada, which over time developed from a Comisión de Fomento through a rural community ( Municipalidad Rural ) to today's community ( Municipalidad ). A large proportion of the population are descendants of the Mapuche , the original population of this zone.
