Eldorado is the capital of the Eldorado department of the same name in the north of the Misiones province in northeast Argentina . With around 54,000 inhabitants, it is the third largest city in the province.
location
Eldorado is located on the east bank of the Paraná and stretches from there about 15 kilometers along a main road that leads inland. While the topography of the western part of the city is flat, the first hills of the Sierras Misioneras, overgrown by subtropical rainforest , begin in the eastern part . The climate is subtropical and humid all year round, with hot summers and warm winters.
history
The city was founded on September 29, 1919 as an agricultural colony by Adolfo Julio Schwelm , a Frankfurt Jew, on his 47th birthday. The colony was initially run by Central European, Scandinavian and Polish immigrants and soon grew into one of the largest cities in the province.
Attractions
Eldorado has three centers on the transverse axis of the city, Avenida San Martín . The oldest is near the port of the city on the Río Paraná. However, it was soon replaced by the new center, which is about eight kilometers to the east, about in the middle of the city. A third center is at the intersection of Avenida San Martín with the national road Ruta Nacional 12, which leads to Posadas and Puerto Iguazú .
Buildings worth seeing are the colonial style Banco Nación in the current center, as well as some old residences in the old center near the port. The Schwelms Park with native tree species and several waterfalls in the area, which are embedded in lush jungle vegetation, are particularly interesting for tourists .
economy
Agriculture and forestry continue to determine the city's economy. In addition, however, there has also been industry for some time (metal processing, construction of agricultural machines, agricultural industry, mate processing).
