The Dixie County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Cross City .
history
Dixie County was formed on April 25, 1921 from parts of Lafayette County. The name was derived from the nickname of the American southern states.
geography
The county has an area of 2237 square kilometers, of which 413 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Taylor County , Lafayette County , Gilchrist County, and Levy County .

According to the 2010 census , Dixie County had 16,422 people in 9,319 households. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 88.8% white, 8.4% African American , 0.4% Indian and 0.3% Asian Americans . 0.5% were members of other races and 1.5% of different races. 3.1% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 26.9% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 36.5% of all households. 65.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.37 people and the average family size was 2.88 people.
21.3% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.6% were 40 to 59 years old, and 27.3% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 45 years. 53.8% of the population were male and 46.2% were female.
The median income for a household in the 35,476 USD , while 16.3% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 96.29% of the population, 1.91% spoke Spanish and 1.80% had another mother tongue.
