The Walton County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is DeFuniak Springs .
history
Walton County was formed on December 29, 1824 from parts of Escambia County. It was named after George Walton , a Florida Territory secretary from 1821 to 1826.
geography
The county covers an area of 3,206 square kilometers, of which 467 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by Okaloosa County to the west and the following counties to the east: Holmes County , Washington County, and Bay County . Together with Okaloosa County, the county forms the metropolitan area of Fort Walton Beach .

According to the 2010 census , Walton County had 55,043 people in 45,064 households. The population density was 20.1 inhabitants per square kilometer. Racially, the population was composed of 87.8% white, 5.8% African American , 0.9% American Indian and 0.9% Asian Americans . 2.2% were members of other races and 2.4% of different races. 5.3% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .
In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 27.8% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 29.0% of all households. 65.1% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.38 people and the average family size was 2.87 people.
22.8% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 29.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 23.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 42 years. 51.2% of the population were male and 48.8% were female.
The median income for a household in the 44,254 USD , while 16.4% of the population lived below the poverty line.
In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 92.96% of the population, 4.15% spoke Spanish and 2.89% had another mother tongue.
