The Glades County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is in Moore Haven .

history

Glades County was formed on April 23, 1921 from parts of DeSoto County and named after the Everglades .

geography

The county has an area of ​​2556 square kilometers, of which 551 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Okeechobee County , Martin County , Palm Beach County , Hendry County , Lee County , Charlotte County , DeSoto County, and Highlands County .

As of the 2010 census , Glades County had 12,884 people in 6,979 households. The population density was 6.4 people per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 71.0% white, 12.3% African American , 4.6% American Indian and 0.4% Asian Americans . 9.9% were members of other races and 1.7% of different races. 21.1% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 there were children under the age of 18 in 26.6% of all households and persons aged at least 65 years in 42.1% of all households. 67.0% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 2.96.

21.0% of the population were younger than 20 years, 24.9% were 20 to 39 years old, 26.2% were 40 to 59 years old, and 27.8% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 43 years. 57.8% of the population were male and 42.2% were female.

The median income for a household in the 35,219 USD , while 25.3% of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2010, English was the mother tongue of 77.43% of the population, 18.78% spoke Spanish and 3.79% had another mother tongue.
