Moore Haven is a city and also the county seat of Glades County in the US state of Florida with 1680 inhabitants (as of 2010).

geography

Moore Haven is located on the Caloosahatchee River and about 10 km west of Lake Okeechobee in the southeast of the county . Miami is 170 km away and Tampa and Orlando are approximately 230 km away.

history

In 1918 the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad (ACL) built a railway line from Sebring to Moore Haven. Another line was built in 1921 by the Moore Haven and Clewiston Railway from Moore Haven to Clewiston , which was sold to the ACL in 1944.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the 1680 inhabitants at that time were distributed over 832 households. The population density was 600 inhabitants / km². 61.2% of the population identified themselves as white, 24.8% as African American and 0.4% as Asian Americans . 11.4% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 2.1% to several ethnic groups. 35.6% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 36.2% of all households and persons aged 65 or over lived in 30.8% of all households. 66.6% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.74 people and the average family size was 3.24 people.

27.4% of the population were younger than 20 years, 27.1% were 20 to 39 years old, 23.1% were 40 to 59 years old, and 22.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 37 years. 52.3% of the population were male and 47.7% were female.

The median annual income was $ 32,159, with 33.6% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 73.19% of the population and Spanish was spoken by 26.81%.

The Moore Haven Downtown Historic District and Moore Haven Residential Historic District are listed on the National Register of Historic Places .

Moore Haven is crossed by US Highway 27 ( SR 25 ). In addition, a railway line runs through the city, which is used for freight traffic.
