The Gilchrist County is a county in the state of Florida of the United States . The county seat is Trenton .
history
Gilchrist County was formed on December 4, 1925 from parts of Alachua County and named after Albert W. Gilchrist , governor of Florida (1909-1913).
geography
The county has an area of 921 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Columbia County , Alachua County , Levy County , Dixie County , Lafayette County, and Suwannee County . Together with Alachua County, the county forms the metropolitan area of Gainesville .

According to the 2010 census , Gilchrist County had 16,939 people in 7,307 households. The population density was 18.7 inhabitants per square kilometer. Ethnically, the population was composed of 90.9% white, 5.3% African American , 0.5% Indian and 0.4% Asian Americans . 1.5% were members of other ethnic groups and 1.5% of different ethnic groups. 5.0% of the population was Hispanic or Latino .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 32.4% of all households lived in 31.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 71.2% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.02.
25.6% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.5% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.4% were 40 to 59 years old, and 23.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 52.2% of the population were male and 47.8% were female.

In 2010, English was the first language of 96.59% of the population, 2.63% spoke Spanish and 0.78% had another mother tongue.
