history

Gilchrist County was formed on December 4, 1925 from parts of Alachua County and named after Albert W. Gilchrist , governor of Florida (1909-1913).

The county has an area of ​​921 square kilometers, of which 17 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Columbia County , Alachua County , Levy County , Dixie County , Lafayette County, and Suwannee County . Together with Alachua County, the county forms the metropolitan area of ​​Gainesville .
