West Miami is a city in Miami-Dade County in the US state of Florida with 5965 inhabitants (as of 2010).

history

in the early 1900s , West Miami was a civil parish in Miami-Dade County. On April 7, 1947, the county prohibited u. a. Games of chance and the number of cocktail hours. Four business people then invested in founding the city. Each of them raised $ 400. They looked for a suitable name, among the suggestions were the names "West Gate", "West Haven" or the current name, "West Miami". Around the same time, the government gave away land to encourage settlement building in the region. After World War I ended and soldiers returned from the war, many built their homes on government free land, including West Miami. When the city was founded there were around 700 buildings; today there are 6,231.

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 5,965 inhabitants were distributed over 2,180 households. The population density was 3313.9 inh / km². 95.0% of the population identified themselves as whites , 1.3% as African American , 0.2% as Indians and 0.2% as Asian Americans . 1.9% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.3% to several ethnic groups. 90.2% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 32.6% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 45.8% of all households. 73.8% of the households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.86 people and the average family size was 3.18 people.

19.7% of the population were younger than 20 years, 23.0% were 20 to 39 years old, 27.9% were 40 to 59 years old, and 29.2% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 45 years. 46.9% of the population were male and 53.1% were female.

The median annual income was $ 34,754, with 15.3% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 12.61% of the population and 87.38% spoke Spanish .

West Miami is affected by the Tamiami Trail ( US 41 , SR 90 ) and Florida State Road 959 . The Miami airport is located 6 km north of the city.

crime

The crime rate in 2010 was 217 points (US average: 266 points) in the average range. There was one robbery, ten personal injuries, 67 break-ins, 103 thefts and eleven car thefts.
