University Park is a census-designated place (CDP) in Miami-Dade County in the US state of Florida with a population of 26,995 (as of 2010).

geography

University Park borders the city of Sweetwater to the north and is approximately 10 km west of Miami . The CDP is crossed and tangent to the Tamiami Trail ( US 41 , SR 90 ) and Florida State Roads 821  ( Homestead Extension of Florida's Turnpike , toll), 976 and 985 .

University Park is home to the Florida International University (FIU) campus , the Frost Art Museum , the headquarters of the National Hurricane Center as well as the FIU Stadium , the FIU Baseball Stadium and the FIU Arena multi-purpose hall .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census, the then 26,995 inhabitants were distributed among 8,141 households. The population density was 2,571.0 inh / km². 90.2% of the population identified themselves as whites , 4.5% as African American , 0.1% as Indians and 1.9% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.6% to several ethnic groups. 85.0% of the population were Hispanics or Latinos .

In 2010 children under the age of 18 lived in 31.5% of all households and persons aged 65 and over lived in 45.7% of all households. 76.8% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or one parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.99 people and the average family size was 3.28 people.

20.7% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 28.8% were 20 to 39 years old, 25.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 25.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 41 years. 46.8% of the population were male and 53.2% were female.

The median annual income was $ 43,516, with 18.1% of the population living below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the first language of 12.07% of the population, 86.45% spoke Spanish and 1.48% had another mother tongue.
