history

Alvesse had been a parish village in the Archidiaconate Denstorf since the 12th century and already formed a parish association with the branch church in Wierthe during this time .

The Romanesque predecessor of today's church was probably built in the 12th century. The medieval towerless church, whose choir was lower and narrower than the nave, was demolished in 1864.

The new building was built in 1867 as a brick building in neo-Romanesque style. The single nave type of a hall church stands on a rectangular ground plan. A semicircular apse forms the east end . A ridge turret on the gable roof , flush with the west facade with an octagonal helmet , serves as a belfry .

The first unadorned chime bell , used in the 19th century, was cast in Wolfenbüttel in 1683 by the bell caster Heiso Meyer and in 1820 it was cast by the Johann Heinrich Wicke foundry in Braunschweig.

St. Nicolai in Alvesse was the place of activity of the Evangelical Lutheran theologian and pastor Hans Buttler (1894-1970), an opponent and victim of the Nazi regime , from 1937 to 1959 . On the occasion of the seventieth anniversary of Buttler's arrest, the parish erected a memorial stone on the south facade of the church in 2008 in memory of the parish priest.
