history

Wierthe was mentioned in a document of the Aegidienkloster Braunschweig as "Wiriti" in 1178 , later also as "Wirete" (1318).

In 1802 Wierthe had 151 inhabitants in 20 fireplaces . With the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Wierthe was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia created by Napoleon in 1807 . After its dissolution in 1813, the place belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig until 1918 .

Wierthe's assignment to the Braunschweig district and its status as an independent municipality ended on March 1, 1974 in the course of the regional reform of Lower Saxony .

From 1866 to 2005 the village was the location of a sugar factory, initially as Actien-Zucker-Fabrik Wierthe . In December 2005, the production facility, last owned by Nordzucker AG, was shut down. During the renovation of the town hall building in Vechelde in 2008, the municipal administration used the office building of the sugar factory. Wierthe was the official seat of the mayor and the municipal administration of Vecheldes for almost a year.

Many of the village's residents now do their business mainly in the regional center of Braunschweig or in the nearby industrial area in the Salzgitter area .

Politics and coat of arms

The mayor is Joachim Kleinert (SPD).

coat of arms
Wierthe coat of arms
Blazon : "The coat of arms is divided diagonally by a golden wavy bar and shows three silver beets on a red backgroundin the lower left fieldand a silver crook on a blue backgroundin the upper right field."
Justification for the coat of arms: This staff reminds of the possessions of the Braunschweig Aegidia Monastery , while the three sugar beets refer to the sugar factory that operated until 2005. The color combinations red-gold and blue-gold indicate the former affiliation to the principality, state and district of Braunschweig.

The coat of arms was approved by the Vechelder municipal council on May 10, 1983, and the design was made by the local home administrator Rudolf Jerolewitz.

Culture and sights

  • The village church of St. Urban was probably built in the 13th century. At the beginning of the 16th century the patronage rights of the church were transferred to the Braunschweiger Kreuzkloster .
  • The village image is determined by central German three-sided and hooked courtyards , next to two-storey workers' houses. With the building complex of the former sugar factory on the eastern edge of the village, Wierthe forms a silhouette that is visible from afar in the otherwise flat landscape.
  • In the northwest of the village are the clarification ponds of the former sugar factory. These tailings ponds , which became useless when the sugar factory closed in 2005, have been transformed into a biotope since they were closed. Ornithologists estimate that around 200 species of birds can be seen in the clearing ponds. The clarification ponds are owned by the Kulturlandpflege Foundation, which wants to ensure the water supply for the pond areas important for breeding and resting birds via a well.
  • The Wierther Holz has been a landscape protection area since 1962 , together with the adjacent Sonnenberger Holz.
