Sonnenberg is a district of the municipality of Vechelde in the Peine district in Lower Saxony .

Sonnenberg lies in the lowlands of the Braunschweig-Hildesheimer Lößbörde in the transition area between the foothills of the northern Harz foreland and the northern German lowlands .

The town is bordered in the west by the broken forest lowlands of the river Aue , in the east by the Salzgitter canal and in the south by the Hanover – Braunschweig railway line .

history

Sonnenberg was first mentioned in the 8th century as "Sunnenbore", later also as "Sunnenberch" (1318). Sonnenberg was named in the context of a donation from the Saxon prince Odiltag and his wife Wentelsuint to the Fulda monastery in 780. There 20 goods of the Liergau are mentioned, including Sunnenbore (= Sonnenberg).

The current place name Sonnenberg is puzzling in that a mountain does not exist in the vicinity of Sonnenberg. With bore which was apparently wendische designation Bore (= castle) meant. It is possible that the current place name arose from bore via berc and the Low German berch . Presumably there was once a castle at the southwest exit of the village, which is indicated by the field name " Burgstelle " in this location .

Around 1440, Sonnenberg was combined with ten other villages in the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel to form the administrative and judicial district " Amt Eich " or "Zur Eiche". The office covered the area west of the city of Braunschweig , from the Braunschweiger Landwehr to about the river Aue . In 1501, Duke Heinrich I , called the Elder , pledged the villages of the office to the city of Braunschweig, under whose administration they remained until 1671, when the era of the independent city of Braunschweig was ended by the reconquest of the princes of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel.

In 1802, Sonnenberg had 329 residents in 38 fireplaces. With the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Sonnenberg was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia created by Napoleon in 1807 . After its dissolution in 1813, the place belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig until 1918 .

Incorporations

Sonnenberg's assignment to the Braunschweig district and its status as an independent municipality ended on March 1, 1974 in the course of the regional reform of Lower Saxony when it was incorporated into Vechelde.

In a blue field a twelve-rayed golden midday sun over a silver hill, in it a blue, undulating river course.

The blue wave bar symbolizes the location of the village on the branch canal to Salzgitter. The coat of arms depicts the place name , it was adopted by the local council on December 12, 1977. The design comes from Wilhelm Krieg.

Culture and sights

Buildings

• The village church of St. Nikolai , built in the 13th or 14th century, is Gothic in its core. The last major renovation took place in 1988.

Landscape protection areas

• The "Sonnenberger Holz", a swamp forest lowland of the river Aue of around 80  hectares , has been a landscape protection area since 1962 , together with the adjacent "Wierther Holz".

Economy and Infrastructure

Sonnenberg was an agricultural village until the second half of the 20th century. Agriculture is only of minor importance in the livelihood structure, although the area around the village is still characterized by intensive agricultural use. Many of the residents of the village do their jobs mainly in the regional center of Braunschweig or in the nearby industrial area in the Salzgitter area .

In the second half of the 20th century, the place expanded to the west and south through residential areas with homes and housing estates. In the last few years several riding stables have been built in the village, which have made Sonnenberg a center of equestrian sports in the region .

In the past few decades, numerous lakes were created in the vicinity of the place through sand and gravel mining , which were recultivated after the construction material extraction was finished. Most of the lakes of this type, such as the Hasselkampsee , are now used as fishing grounds. A gravel mine is currently in operation in the southeast of the village.
