The Hasselkampsee (also Hasselkampteich ) is a groundwater lake northwest of the village of Sonnenberg in the municipality of Vechelde , Peine district in Lower Saxony . It is located about four kilometers west of the city of Braunschweig , on the edge of the broken forest lowlands of the river Aue .
The water was created through sand and gravel mining in the second half of the 20th century. After the extraction of building materials was finished, the area was landscaped through recultivation in the 1980s.
Today, reed stands have formed on flat bank areas , which are important as a habitat for amphibians . In the winter months, the Hasselkampsee is an important resting place for migratory birds such as the dwarf hawker .
The lake is owned by the Angelsportverein Braunschweig and is used as an angling area.
