The Capuchin Monastery Feldkirch is a monastery of the Capuchin Order in Feldkirch , Vorarlberg.

history

The monastery was founded in 1602. The church was consecrated in 1605 by the Chur bishop Johann V. Flugi. Saint Fidelis von Sigmaringen , who was guardian in Feldkirch in 1621 and was murdered in Seewies in 1622, enjoys special veneration . Fidelis was on March 24, 1729 by Pope Benedict XIII. Beatified and canonized by Pope Benedict XIV in 1746 . Saint Fidelis is next to Saint Gebhard the patron saint of the diocese of Feldkirch . The preacher Lucianus Montifontanus started the novitiate in this monastery and finished as a guardian in this monastery in 1704.

After Austria was annexed to Hitler's Germany, the monastery was expropriated and closed until the end of the Second World War. Due to the decrease in the number of brothers, the monastery in Feldkirch was completely renovated in 2007 and the Capuchin monasteries in Bludenz and Bezau closed and continued in the monastery in Feldkirch as the sole fraternity in Vorarlberg. The Gauenstein Capuchin Monastery in Schruns, an education and recreation center, forms the Feldkirch / Gauenstein Capuchin community with the Feldkirch Capuchin Monastery, one Capuchin lives permanently in Gauenstein.

The simple rectangular building with a flat wooden beam ceiling with a choir and monks choir has a gable roof with a turret. The neo-Romanesque high altar from the years 1890 to 1893 according to the plans of Father Virgil Gangl and executed by Capuchin brother Wenzel Schnitzer. The setting of the tabernacle is from 1921 by the painter Anton Jehly . In the nave a flag image Martyrdom and Glory of St. Fidelius , made in 1746, the year of his canonization. The former Lady Chapel at the side was converted into a confessional and discussion room in 2007. The newer entrance porch, which opens up the church and Fidelis Chapel, has a round arched portal with stone reveal and IHS medallion. The tomb of Vogt Johannes Andreas Pappus von Trazberg, who was connected to the seraphic way of life, is located in the almost square forecourt. In 1906 a round arch arcade with a Lourdes grotto with a Madonna figure by Fidelis Rudhart was added to the grave according to the plans of Fidel Kröner . There is also a long stone trough well in the forecourt.

The Fidelis Chapel is at right angles to the church. The neo-Gothic altar from 1911 is by Fidelis Rudhart and executed by the Capuchin brother Pascalis Kehrer. The figures are by Fidelis Rudhart. The Windows Canticle of the Sun of St. Francis from 2006 to 2007 are by Sister Raphaela Bürgi. The original cell of St. Fidelis was added as a Fidelis cell in 1729, with paneling, writing desk, wooden coffin and prayer stool of St. Fidelis. In 2007 an exhibition room dedicated to St. Fidelis was created.

The monastery is to the east of the church and has a cloister. It includes the living area of ​​the fraternity, a poor room, a pilgrims' room and guest rooms. In the cloister is a painting 4 Evangelists by the painter Dietrich Meuss from 1617 and a mural St. Francis by the painter Rosa Benesch from 1969. The monastery is the seat of the Seraphic Works of Love for Vorarlberg and Liechtenstein .
