history

The village of Wahle was first mentioned in 1141 as "Walede", later it appeared as "Welethe" (1181), "Maior Woeledhe" (1258) and "Wolde" (1369). In addition to Wahle, there is also a village called “Walethe Minor” (1226) or “Lutteken Wolde” (1344; both names mean “Klein Wahle”). When Klein Wahle was abandoned in the second half of the 14th century and fell “desolate”, the inhabitants settled in Wahle and continued to cultivate their corridors from there. It is possible that Wahle took in more farmers from Vechelde around 1400 after the castle and village of Vechelde were pledged to the city of Braunschweig in 1392 .

The right of patronage of the village church of St. Martini was initially subject to the Brunswick Cyriakus foundation . At the beginning of the 14th century the village was attached to the archdeaconate Schmedenstedt . The parish continued to award the dean of the Cyriakus monastery.

In 1618 a mineral spring was discovered northeast of the village, which was developed and operated as a health well for a short time. The spring silted up again during the course of the Thirty Years War . In the 1720s, the Brunswick city physicist Rudolph August Behrens , personal physician to Duke August Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , examined the healing properties of the mineral spring. However, the source remained unused.

In 1802 Wahle had 300 residents in 42 fireplaces. With the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , Wahle was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia created by Napoleon in 1807 . After the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in 1813, the place belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig until 1918 .

Wahles assignment to the district of Braunschweig ended in 1974 in the course of the regional reform of Lower Saxony . On March 1, 1974, Wahle was incorporated into the municipality of Vechelde. In the past few decades, the place has started to expand with private homes and housing estates, and to the south with industrial areas.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows on a golden shield a blue, wavy triangle ending in a point in which there is a golden millstone. This wave tip symbolizes the healing spring created in 1618 by a sinkhole, which later dried up again. The golden millstone reminds of the first settler named in 1313, the miller Johann, who was enfeoffed with his water and windmill by the Commander of the Order of St. John . The blue-gold color confirms the affiliation to the former state of Braunschweig.

The coat of arms was adopted by the local council on December 3, 1981. The design comes from Arnold Rabbow.
