The current editors since 1995 (Volume 29/30) are Rolf Bergmann , Damaris Nübling , Ulrich Obst and Heinrich Tiefenbach . The magazine appears in four issues per year and is published by the University Press Winter in Heidelberg . In addition to the contributions, new publications on name research and general linguistic publications are reviewed. In addition to German, the publication languages ​​are English and French.

The magazine was originally founded in 1949 by Hans Krahe and edited by him together with Ernst Dickemann up to volume 16 (1965). In 1966 Rudolf Schützeichel founded the new series and was editor-in-chief with Ernst Dickemann and Jürgen Untermann. The group of editors was then expanded to include Rolf Bergmann and Ulrich Obst.
