history

History of the district

Duchess Elisabeth Sophie Marie,
painting by Christoph Bernhard Francke , before 1729

Fürstenau stands on the site of the Haslere desert , which was first mentioned in 1318. In 1716, Duchess Elisabeth Sophie Marie (1683–1767) acquired the Häßlerhof or Hasselhof that still existed there and had a pleasure palace built, which was named Schloss Fürstenau . The castle was little used, only served as a prison for the court in Vechelde around 1802 and was demolished at the beginning of the 19th century. Today, apart from parts of the moat, no building remains are visible on the former castle grounds.

In the 1720s, Rudolph August Behrens , personal physician to Duke August Wilhelm von Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel , examined the healing properties of a mineral spring near the village. However, the source remained unused.

In 1802, Fürstenau had 65 residents in ten fireplaces.

With the Principality of Braunschweig-Wolfenbüttel, Fürstenau was incorporated into the Kingdom of Westphalia created by Napoleon in 1807 . By a royal decree of January 5, 1813, the Commune Fürstenau in the rural canton of Peine ( Braunschweig district in the Oker department ) was repealed and merged with the Commune Sophienthal .

After the dissolution of the Kingdom of Westphalia in the same year, the place belonged to the Duchy of Braunschweig until 1918 . Fürstenau's assignment to the Braunschweig district ended on March 1, 1974 in the course of the regional reform of Lower Saxony . Since then, the place has belonged to the municipality of Vechelde and thus to the district of Peine .

coat of arms

Fürstenau coat of arms (Vechelde) (ngw.nl) .jpg

The coat of arms of Fürstenau shows on a red shield a silver Holstein nettle leaf in the middle of which there is a green hazel leaf . This hazel leaf is reminiscent of the former place Haslere, which fell into desolation in 1481 for unknown reasons. Only the Haßelhof testified to the name of the former settlement in 1664. The silver nettle leaf on a red background stands for Duchess Elisabeth Sophie Marie, the new founder of the town, who gave it the name “Fürstenau” in 1719. It came from the Princely House of Schleswig-Holstein-Sonderburg , which had the nettle leaf of the Counts of Schauenburg in its coat of arms .

The coat of arms was adopted at the citizens' meeting on April 26, 1986. The design comes from Arnold Rabbow.
