history

Place name

The final syllable "-mar" goes back to the Old High German word mari and means "swampy area". Later, the village was given the addition “before the Lange Wisch” (= meadow) or “bei der Lange Wisch”, probably to distinguish it from the other village of the same name. In 1146 the place name Bethmare was written, in the 13th century also Betmare / Betmere, and the current spelling has been used since the 17th century.

Local history

Bettmar is mentioned in writing for the first time in the founding document of the Godehardikloster in Hildesheim from March 11, 1146. Bettmar was then in Ostfalengau and belonged to the County of Peine. Due to the disputes between the heirs of Heinrich the Lion and the Bishop of Hildesheim , the county of Peine was divided. The eastern part remained a Guelph area until modern times and became a half-court . Bettmar became a border town to the Hildesheim Monastery and belonged to the Wolfenbüttel line of the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg .

Bettmar was the seat of a bailiff that belonged to the Wolfenbüttel residence office until 1807. During the Napoleonic period, the canton of Bettmar belonged to the Oker department . In 1814, Bettmar became the seat of a district court and remained so until 1825 when Vechelde became the new location. Bettmar lost its administrative importance in the Duchy of Braunschweig , which it held for almost 600 years.

When the district of Braunschweig was split up during the Lower Saxony regional and administrative reform in 1974 , Bettmar and the western part came to the district of Peine . On March 1, 1974, the village also lost its independence and is now part of the municipality of Vechelde .

Half course Bettmar

After the Peine Castle was destroyed by the Guelphs in 1192, the part of the County of Peine located after Braunschweig - the Gogericht an der Pisser or Bettmar District Court - came under the dependency of the Guelphs. From now on, this area was administered jointly by the Bishops of Hildesheim and the Dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg as the highest exempt counts. The Bettmar Regional Court continued the tradition of the old Count's Court in Peine. Three different courts met in Bettmar: the free court, the regional court and the Vogtding. The court days took place in the week after Michaelmas .

District Court of Bettmar

In 1814, the lower state administration in the Duchy of Braunschweig was reorganized. The focus was on the judiciary, whereby the duchy was divided into reporting circles, with the district courts at the head. They were also given general administration, which was in the hands of the respective district administrator. Bettmar became the seat of such a district court and thus remained the center of attention for 27 villages.

The first and last district administrator in Bettmar was Carl Friedrich Pini, 1814–1825. On October 1, 1825, the district court was relocated to Vechelde. Bettmar lost its administrative importance for the places west of Braunschweig.

Post connection

Bettmar had had a post office since 1814 and the district court had been relocated there. When it was moved to Velchelde in 1825, the post office was also suspended. The consignments then had to be posted in Vechelde. Since 1815 there have only been handwritten place notes on letters without a date. coat of arms

Coat of arms Bettmar (Vechelde) (ngw.nl) .jpg

Bettmar's coat of arms shows an upright sword in alternating colors in the middle of the red and gold split shield. The two-part shield symbolizes the location of Bettmar as a border town between the territories of the bishops of Hildesheim and the Duchy of Braunschweig. The sword stands for the exercise of the cross-border function of the judiciary. The colors red and gold reflect both the traditional ducal-Brunswick colors and the colors of the Hildesheim monastery.

The coat of arms was approved by the local council on September 11, 1991, the design comes from Arnold Rabbow.

church

Bettmar village church

The village church of Bettmar is on the outskirts of the village, whose oldest building it is. A pastor in Bettmar is mentioned as early as 1301. The founding date of the church, which was redesigned in 1679 and 1766, also dates back to this time. The Lutheran Reformation was supported by Duke Ernst "the Confessor" and entered Bettmar before 1542.

Most of the population of Bettmar today belongs to the Protestant church, whose pastoral office is in Bettmar and from which the - otherwise independent - parish of Sierße is also supplied. Bettmar belongs to the Vechelde provost of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Braunschweig . The Catholic residents belong to the parish of Vechelde within the diocese of Hildesheim .

school

As early as 1750, a school house was mentioned in Bettmar, which had to be replaced by a new one in 1807, which in turn had to give way to a new building in 1893. In the 1980s, the Bettmarer School lost its independence and became a branch of the Albert Schweitzer Primary School Vechelde. The last headmaster in Bettmar was Alfred Böhm from 1961 to 1982.

Sons and daughters of the place

curiosity

After Bettmar was incorporated into the municipality of Vechelde as part of the municipality reform in 1974, some street names in the village had to be changed.

The previous “Dorfstrasse” should also be given a new name. When looking at the oak tree on this street - a natural monument - the Bettmaraner called the street “Eichen-Dorfstraße”. In the town hall in Vechelde, however, they knew that the spelling of the name could not be correct. In memory of the poet, they simply wrote “ Eichendorffstrasse ” and had the corresponding signs put up.
