Location of Schmedenstedt in Lower Saxony

Schmedenstedt is a village and part of the city of Peine in Lower Saxony .

geography

Schmedenstedt is located south of the town center of Peine, east of Ilsede a little south of the K 71.

history

The first documentary mention of Schmedenstedt comes from August 6th, 1166: Bishop Hermann von Hildesheim pledged his court in Schmedenstedt for 70 marks to his ministerial Ulrich von dem Beke in order to be able to service a transfer for his army expedition to Italy promised to Emperor Friedrich I. Barbarossa . Schmedenstedt was temporarily the seat of an archdeaconate in the diocese of Hildesheim . The village existed as an independent village for almost a thousand years before it was incorporated into Peine on March 1, 1974.

politics

The CDU has three seats in the local council and the SPD two. Local mayor since November 1, 2016 is Mario Hesse (independent). The candidacy took place on the CDU list.

coat of arms

The coat of arms shows a red asymmetrical oak with a large branch draped with two acorns and oak leaves over a red anvil on a gold shield with a black shield base. The anvil symbolizes a forge and thus gives the place name as “forge”. The red and gold color indicates that it belonged to the former duchy of Hildesheim for centuries (until 1802) . The tree represents the so-called "mother oak", which in its real model has a trunk circumference of five and a half meters.

The coat of arms was approved by the Interior Minister of Lower Saxony on October 16, 1951; the design was made by Rudolf Dehnke.

Culture and sights

St. George's Church
  • In Schmedenstedter Holz, the primeval, protected "mother oak" with a trunk circumference of five and a half meters stood until 2019. The tree, damaged by lightning and drought, collapsed in a storm in spring 2019. The mother oak is the model for the oak in the coat of arms.
  • The Schmedenstedt Church of St. Georg from 1612 is one of the most outstanding art monuments in the Peiner Land, as wall paintings from the construction period have been preserved inside the half-timbered building.
  • The local sports club was founded in 1925 and offers football, badminton, table tennis, Latin American dances, darts, gymnastics, children's gymnastics and mother-and-child sports.
